One of Long Island’s best secrets is the Riverhead Blues Festival

For 2006

One of Long Island’s best secrets is the Riverhead Blues Festival. This is a three day event, which this year hosted fifty bands and over 400 performers, on two indoor and two outdoor stages, and all for free! As with years past, the sixth annual festival, held July 16th-18th in downtown Riverhead, covered quite a bit of ground, but this reviewer was able to see performers on Saturday.

On the Riverfront stage, Rob Ross made you think of John Lee Hooker and had the crowd dancing up a storm. The Chuck Lambert Band followed and gave a great performance of a variety of tunes, the harmonica was especially impressive. Two blocks away on the smaller of the outdoor stages was Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco band, Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos, who were the highlight for the night for this reviewer and his wife. With a small crowd of about 150, everybody got to hear a variety of Cajun songs and some cool solos by the band members. Hope their back next year.

Every year the Town of Riverhead has improved on the organization of the festival, and next year another indoor stage is already planned. Lets hope it stays a free event. My personal thanks to the town for a chance to hear some good blues.
